It is the objective of LEO to become and remain a European leader within bone turnover and coagulation. The present focus in bone turnover is in nephrology dealing with the treatment and prevention of renal osteodystrophy. Within coagulation we focus on treatment of thromboembolic disorders and related diseases. Knowledge in coagulation
LEO Pharma has a proud heritage of research and development within the area of coagulation disorders.
We pride ourselves on the results that the dedicated and motivated people at LEO Pharma have achieved over many years.
In 1940, only a short time after the first clinical use of heparin, Heparin LEO® was launched. LEO Pharma has subsequently supplied this valuable product to most European markets as well as a number of overseas markets. Today, LEO Pharma is amongst the largest suppliers of unfractionated heparin (UFH).
In 1991, LEO Pharma launched a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), Innohep® (tinzaparin sodium), which is available in most of Europe, Canada as well as a number of other overseas markets including the USA. Innohep® is the first LMWH that was approved for treatment of established Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in an effective and safe, once daily dosage.
LEO Pharma has great experience in producing medicines from biological sources and can assure the quality of our heparin-derived products through the entire process from collection of mucosa to production of finished goods.
Three of our six pharmaceutical manufacturing sites at LEO Pharma are dedicated to the manufacture of heparin and tinzaparin.
LEO Pharma is one of the few research-based companies that maintains its own integrated manufacturing from extraction of raw material from animal tissue to production of finished product, and we strive to ensure the quality of every step of the process.
LEO Pharma also supplies the heparin antidote, Protamine Sulphate LEO Pharma in a number of markets.
Knowledge in bone turnover
LEO is one of the leading companies in the prophylaxis and treatment of renal osteodystrophy.
We work to ensure appropriate use of One-Alpha® in all relevant patients sufferring from renal disease in pre-dialysis, dialysis and the post-transplantation stages of the disease. LEO is dedicated to post-graduate education of doctors treating patients with renal osteodystrophy.
New compounds from the basic vitamin D research programme at LEO are constantly screened for their effects on bone turnover. At the same time, we are searching for compounds that enhance the bone building and bone preserving effects of vitamin D while minimizing the potential side effects of a potent vitamin D analogue.
Ongoing clinical research with One-Alpha® will improve the way specialists use alfacalcidol in the future, and new formulations developed by the pharmacists at LEO aim at improved patient compliance.
Furthermore, LEO is constantly researching other types of bone disease (for example prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis) which may benefit from treatment with existing or future vitamin D analogues.
International product managers are responsible for the development of product strategies and tactics, and support affiliates in implementing local activities.
Within the areas of coagulation and bone turnover international product managers play an active role and initiate many activities at an international level, for example symposia and exhibitions. They feel ownership of their products and are responsible for international branding.
